Grand Meadow Park Groundbreaking

We want to thank everyone who came out to the meadow on August 30th to help us celebrate the Grand Meadow Groundbreaking of Austin Parks Foundation’s phase 1 construction! Our community who comes together to celebrate and steward the land is what makes this project special!

A special thank you goes to Austin Parks Foundation for facilitating and funding constructing our new park and for joining us and going over the construction plans (more below). More special thank you’s go to all of our supporters who joined us: Mayor Pro Tem Fuentes who said some kind words about our community, Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Fruitful Commons, Constable George Morales, Watershed, Onion Creek Park Neighborhoods Alliance, and so many others!

Construction

Phase 1 construction could begin as early as today! A construction fence will be placed around the park to close it off during construction. Austin Parks Foundation said the construction is estimated to take about 12 months. The bulk of it will take about 6 months and then the next 6 months will mainly be establishing vegetation. The east side of the park might open up earlier than 12 months from now if all is completed as most of the work will be on the west side.

Phase 1 will include building the loop trail with shade trees, the nature playground, play lawn, community garden fence, installing irrigation for the shade trees and food forest/garden areas, a pavilion, and regrading the northwest area to install a retention pond. The areas that will be regraded will be reseeded with native wildflower seeds. Austin Parks Foundation has taken much care to research the best ways to reestablish and care for the meadow after construction as they know it is a beloved feature of our park! Thank you!
